CTL defines effective teaching in terms of its empirical effect on student learning.
Factors that increase student learning are the following:
Clarity of instruction and academic tasks through the use of structured syllabi, assignments, and lessons.
Multiple opportunities during class for students to engage in active learning through thinking tasks and collaborative conversations.
Guided practice opportunities precede evaluation (quizzes, exams, graded assignments) on new content.
Instructor requires students to apply essential understandings versus. recall trivial facts in both practice tasks and assessments.
Instructional planning centers on a limited number of key concepts and principles in the form of measurable learning outcomes.
