Abstract: Faculty members are familiar with the norms for discourse in their respective disciplines and, to a lesser degree, about teaching. However, many faculties have not been exposed to the added-value that the incorporation of diversity can bring to teaching, learning and research. In this interactive workshop, Dr. James A. Anderson will explore the systematic use of powerful pedagogies as key elements in preparing the CSUDH community to become a learner-centered laboratory for using diversity and globalization strategically to effect long-term change.
Bio: Dr. Anderson is Associate Provost for Institutional Assessment and Diversity at the University at Albany (State University of New York). His research has focused on the development of learning styles across gender, race, culture and class, and an examination of how diversity impacts student learning, retention and overall institutional effectiveness. He has served as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow, a Danforth Fellow and a National Learning Communities Fellow. In 2005, Dr. Anderson was awarded the National Association of Student Personnel Administration (NASPA) Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education Award, and in 2004 was honored by the National Association of Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Commission on Human Resources and Social Change with an Outstanding Service award. Dr. Anderson’s most recent book, “Documenting the Educational Benefits of Diversity: A 21st Century Paradigm for Teaching and Learning” will be published this fall. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Villanova University.
