Abstract:   Dr. Craig Nelson is a national expert on critical thinking, cognitive development and innovative pedagogies, with particular expertise in courses having historically low levels of student success. In his presentation he described how equity and high levels of success can be achieved if the teaching/learning environment is appropriately organized, using research- based pedagogies. Among the issues Dr. Nelson examined were: 1) How can the professor dramatically increase student success in courses without lowering standards? 2) How can instructors encourage students to work harder? and, 3) How can instructors set up an assessment system that provides feedback to the faculty member and equity to all students? Dr. Nelson modeled the interactive pedagogies that he endorses and provided handouts in support of his presentation. This workshop buildton the foundation set by Dr. Vincent Tinto during his recent presentation at CSUDH in developing campus conversations about student engagement.
