Abstract: Dr. Vincent Tinto presented a workshop focusing on how CSUDH and other campuses can become true communities of learners. Drawing on his landmark research on student success and learning communities, Dr. Tinto focused on the role of student engagement to foster a variety of cognitive and affective outcomes. Included in his discussion was a range of initiatives from cooperative and problem-based learning to learning communities that universities are now using to promote student engagement and success. He drew on his own recent research and current work of other scholars to document the impact of the initiatives described above. Dr. Tinto’s workshop was highly interactive and included time for faculty and staff to work together to begin the process of planning for a more engaged campus. All members of the university community found Dr. Tinto’s presentation engaging and thought provoking.
